Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private Herbert Hollman Clark of 52 Battalion was born at Bendigo Victoria in 1890. He was one of seven sons and two daughters born to Edmund and Mary Clark.
It is not known when the family came to Western Australia and took up residence in Tate Street, West Leederville.
His schooling is not known; however, his occupation is shown as a painter when he enlisted in August 1915.
After training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp he was posted to 12 Reinforcement of 12 Battalion.
In December 1915, they boarded HMAT Ajana at Fremantle and sailed for Egypt.
After further training with 3 Training Battalion he was posted to 52 Battalion at Tel el Kebir, Egypt and in May 1916 he embarked on HMT Iverna and sailed from Alexandria for Marseilles.
He was hospitalised in July and October with influenza and bronchitis and then returned to his unit in December.
Herbert had several stays in hospital in 1917, one with appendicitis and also after being gassed. He re-joined the battalion in February 1918.
Private Herbert Hollman Clark, service number 3807 of 52 Battalion, died of wounds at 3 Canadian Stationary Hospital at Doullens on 6 April 1918. He was 28 years of age.
He is buried at Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension number 1.
His plaque is placed alongside Private John Victor Burns who also served in 12 Battalion at the same time as Herbert.
