Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private Brian Edward Castle of 1 Battalion Royal Australian Regiment was born to Isobel and Arthur Castle in 1929 at Narembeen, Western Australia. He had one sister, Dawn, who dedicated his plaque.
Brian received his schooling in Kalgoorlie following which he took on farm work and became a skilled sheep judge.
In November 1951, he decided to join the army as there was a United Nations war going on in Korea in which he wanted to participate.
Following basic training, he was posted to the 1 Battalion Royal Australian Regiment and he left for Korea.
It was during the battle for Majon-ni that Brian was killed, alongside his good friend and mate Private Allen Head. Their plaques are placed together in the Honour Avenues.
Private Brian Edward Castle, service number 5/400197 1 Battalion RAR, was killed in action in Korea on 17 November 1952.
He was 23 years of age and is buried in the United Nations Memorial Cemetery, Busan, Korea.
Dawn has visited Busan and has written these words -
In 2007, my daughter, Dianne and I visited the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan, Korea.
I remember walking into the cemetery thinking of the last time I saw Brian as he got on the tram in West Perth, on his way to the airport to join his unit in Sydney. Little did I know it would be the last time I would see him.
We were guided, by the assistant custodian, to Brian’s plaque in the beautiful gardens and then shown to the Memorial Hall where the names of the service personnel who died in the Korean War are engraved.
It was a very emotional and breathtaking time. Now we have this plaque, here in this wonderful setting where we can visit and pay our respects to my brother.
