Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private Edwin David Campbell, or Dave as he was known, was born in Perth in December 1889. He was the son of Alexander and Elizabeth Campbell and he had a brother and a sister, and step brother and step sister.
They were mainly raised at Moora. Dave was schooled at home, in Roberts Street, as the house was used as the school as well as the church.
After finishing his education, he worked at the Pioneer Bakery which was the family business and is still operating today.
He attempted to enlist early in the war but was deemed too short. They eventually lowered the minimum height and he was accepted in August 1915 at Moora. He showed his occupation as a grocer.
After training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp, he embarked on HMAT Ulysses at Fremantle for Egypt in November 1915.
After further training, they left Alexandria for Marseilles aboard HMAT Corsican arriving there in April 1916.
Dave had various times in hospital suffering a sprained ankle, mumps and trench foot.
In June 1917, he was posted to the Lewis gunner’s school at Tidworth, England and later returned to his unit in France.
Private Edwin David Campbell, service number 3288 of 11 Battalion, died of wounds received in France on 7 August 1918. He was 28 years of age.
