Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private Charles James Chapple of 16 Battalion was born in Broken Hill in June 1893, one of two brothers and a sister born to Albert and Alice Chapple of Kalgoorlie.
He attended Christian Brothers College at Kalgoorlie and enjoyed amateur athletics. After leaving school he worked at his relative's produce store in north Kalgoorlie.
Charles enlisted in Kalgoorlie in August 1915 and trained at Blackboy Hill Military Camp with some of his mates who called themselves 'the homeless hectors'.
He left Fremantle on board HMAT Benalla in November 1915 and joined the 11 Reinforcements for 16 Battalion at Tel el Kebir.
After further training in Egypt he left Alexandria in June 1916 for Marseilles. He was wounded in August and later rejoined his battalion.
Private Charles James Chappell, service number 3428 of 16 Battalion, was killed in action on 7 February 1917 at Flers. He was 23 years of age.
