Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private Reginald Charles Clarke of 11 Battalion was born in 1889 at Moss Vale in New South Wales. He was the eldest son of Joseph Clarke and Alice McIntyre. His siblings were Ivy Alice, Joseph George, Edward and Sylvia Caroline.
The family moved to Western Australia and settled in Geraldton, where Alice operated Clarke’s Coffee Palace and boarding house in Marine Terrace. His father Joseph worked as a carpenter.
Reginald attended primary school in Geraldton and later completed his education at Fremantle Boys’ School.
At the time of his enlistment in Geraldton in August 1914, Reginald was working as a miner in the Murchison Goldfields.
After training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp, he was posted to 11 Battalion.
Reginald embarked at Fremantle in November on HMAT Ascanius, bound for Gallipoli. Soon after their arrival, the battalion was in action.
Private Reginald Charles Clarke, service number 766 of 11 Battalion, was killed in action at Gallipoli on 11 May 1915. He was 26 years of age.
His plaque his placed alongside that of his younger brother Private Joseph Clarke of 51 Battalion, who was killed in action in September 1916.
Reginald is also related through marriage to Private Henry Clarke of 28 Battalion and Private Edwin Powell of 51 Battalion.
