Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private Alfred Hart Chappell of 51 Battalion was born at Ballarat in Victoria in April 1893. He was one of three sons of Thomas and Frances Chappell of Argyle Street, West Leederville.
His mother died when he was five. His father was subsequently remarried to Edith and two daughters were added to the family.
He attended school at Boorara and later worked in a timber mill.
He enlisted at Blackboy Hill in July 1915 and was posted to 10 Reinforcement 11 Battalion. After training Alfred embarked on HMAT Themistocles in October bound for Tel el Kebir.
In February 1916 he was transferred from 11 Battalion to 51 Battalion.
In June 1916 he sailed from Alexandria to Marseilles aboard the Ivernia, with the battalion going into action in France.
Private Alfred Hart Chappell, service number 3031 of 51 Battalion, was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 3 September 1916. He was aged 23.
