Biography presented during plaque dedication:

Sapper Erwin James Burrell was born at Northam in October 1905. He was the son of John and Alice Burrell and he had one sister.

He attended school at Goomalling and Subiaco and was a good footballer. After leaving school, he undertook further studies and graduated as an engineer.

Erwin was married to Doreen and they lived at Norwood Road, Rivervale.

He tried to enlist in the Air Force but was rejected because of a hand injury, so he enlisted in the army at Fremantle in June 1940 and was posted to 2/2 Field Park Company.

He went to the Middle East and was seconded to the Royal Navy and was part of a team transporting fresh water to Benghazi.

Sapper Erwin James Burrell, service number WX4747 of 2/2 Field Park Company, was killed in action at Sollum, Egypt on 24 December 1940. He was 35 years of age.

His plaque is placed alongside that of a known relative, Corporal William Hicks of 28 Battalion.
