Biography presented during plaque dedication:

Private John Campbell, known as Jack, was born in Ballarat in 1896 and was the eldest of six children.

The family moved to Kalgoorlie to prospect for gold and Jack went to school in Kalgoorlie, Cue and Chidlow.

About age 18, Jack and a mate started farming in the Wickipin district but decided to join up after the outbreak of war. They walked to Chidlow and Jack enlisted in 11 Battalion in September 1915.

He left Fremantle in January 1916 on board the HMAT 'Borda' for Europe and transferred into 1 Australian Pioneers in March 1916.

Jack was killed in action at Mouquet Farm, Pozieres on 21 August 1916, aged 20.
