Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Trooper Wilfred Lukin Harper of the 10 Light Horse Regiment was born in July 1890, the son of Charles and Fanny Harper of Woodbridge, Guildford and later Mount Street, Perth. He had four brothers and four sisters.
He attended Guildford Grammar School and continued his studies at Perth Technical School, concentrating on agricultural subjects.
He farmed at Gingin, then at Ferndale farm at Balingup, intent on scientific and innovative agriculture like his father before him at Woodbridge.
Wilfred was a keen sportsman playing cricket, football and athletic events. In 1908, he topped the batting and bowling averages at Guildford Grammar.
Wilfred and his brother Trooper Gresley Tatlock Harper enlisted at Guildford in December 1914 and were posted to A Squadron of 10 Light Horse.
After training they embarked at Fremantle in February 1915 on HMAT Mashobra, bound for Gallipoli via Alexandria.
Troopers Wilfred Lukin Harper, service number 114 and Gresley Tatlock Harper, service number 113, both of 10 Light Horse were killed in action at Walker’s Ridge, Gallipoli on 7 August 1915. Wilfred was 25 and Gresley was 31 years old.
