Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Trooper Gresley Tatlock Harper of the 10 Light Horse Regiment was born in February 1884, the son of Charles and Fanny Harper of Woodbridge, Guildford and later Mount Street, Perth. He had four brothers and four sisters.
He attended Guildford Grammar School and continued his studies at St Peter’s College in Adelaide. He then completed his bachelor of law degree at Melbourne University in May 1909.
Gresley was admitted to practice law in the Supreme Court of Victoria in August 1910 and then in Western Australia as a barrister in December 1911.
He was a keen sportsman and played cricket and Australian Rules football.
Gresley and his brother Trooper Wilfred Lukin Harper enlisted at Guildford in December 1914 and were posted to A Squadron of 10 Light Horse.
After training they embarked at Fremantle in February 1915 on HMAT Mashobra, bound for Gallipoli via Alexandria.
Troopers Gresley Tatlock Harper, service number 113 and Wilfred Lukin Harper, service number 114, both of 10 Light Horse were killed in action at Walker’s Ridge, Gallipoli on 7 August 1915. Gresley was 31 and Wilfred was 25 years old.
